Superintendent's Corner

Superintendent's Welcome

Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year. The Board of Education, Administration, and staff have been extremely busy over the summer. We have further enhanced safety and security for our students, faculty, & staff by adding a rear vestibule that connects memorial Middle School and the Gymnasium. We moved the main Entrance to Washington School to Main Door #2 (Red Door), to further ensure safety and security.

The district will be going "Green" this year, thus eliminating paper handouts, except for critical information. Announcements will be added on the school website and be accessible on the E-Backpack. Please get used checking in regularly to stay well informed. You will also be receiving 'Blast Phone Calls" to remind you of important happenings. It is important that you update your contact information when that form is sent home to you in the beginning of the school year.

We have made some changes to the lunch program which will affect those students who bring in their own lunch. We are asking that you supply a cold pack in your child's lunch. We do not have the refrigeration space as our school lunch program has taken off and requires large storage space. Therefore, your child will bring their lunch in and it will remain in their classroom for grades K-6. Grades 7 & 8 will drop their lunch in the crates by the Multi-Purpose Room.

To this end, we have transformed our academic schedule to give every student the opportunity to win through a rigorous curriculum:

  • Third & Fourth grades are now departmentalized. The 3rd & 4th Grades will now change classes just as the other middle school grades do. This is being done so students will receive Math instruction from math specialists.
  • We will be cracking down on chronically absent and late students. Please make every effort to get your child to school and on time! If you run into problems with either of these issues, please contact your building principal.

There is no doubt in my mind that our schools are successful because of the outstanding partnership developed with our parents. As the Superintendent of Schools, I am deeply committed to ongoing communication with you as we work in school and at home to attain our shared mission. I invite you to continue to visit our website for ongoing updates, newsletters, and highlights.  These will inform and inspire you as we stand shoulder to shoulder to develop lifelong learners with the knowledge and skill to build a better tomorrow for us all.

Official Statement
Closing of Washington School
Frank R. Scarafile - Superintendent of Schools

March 27, 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian/Stakeholder,

Last night the Board of Education approved a plan brought forth by administration to formally apply to the state to close Washington School. Built in 1914, Washington School has housed our 1st & 2nd Graders for the past twenty-five years. Over time, the building structure has deteriorated to the point that it needs over 1.5 million dollars in new roofing, re-doing ceilings, and fixing air-conditioning and heating. That is without any other emergency items that crop up. The bottom line is that we are closing the building for ‘Health & Safety Reasons.”

At this juncture, the Board of Education has to get the permission from the New Jersey Department of Education to close the building and allow us to put up a brand new, temporary, modular structure in the rear of Memorial School. This building will service our Pre-K classes, as well as our 7th & 8th Graders.

We plan to have a community meeting in mid-May, to give everyone the information necessary to make this transition seamless. There is a plan for a referendum on building a new Elementary School. We look forward to your comments and input during this transition. Again, I thank you for your trust in my judgement and leadership to make our school district the best it can be!
