Superintendent's Corner

Superintendent's Welcome

Dear Staff, Parents, Guardians, and Students:

I hope you enjoyed a happy and healthful summer filled with amazing family experiences.  Although the outside temperature still reads summer, it’s time to welcome you back to our amazing learning communities that comprise the Little Ferry School District.  As we usher in the 2018-19 school year, we do so with great enthusiasm and high expectations for all stakeholders. We’ll face some challenges together, but we’ve done so successfully many times in the past and the results have been extremely positive.

Once again, we are working to make our school facilities welcoming, safe, and nurturing places that encourage all to begin a fantastic journey of self-discovery. This includes adding new boilers for Memorial School replacing 40 and 50-year-old inefficient systems and adding air-conditioning to the gym. These repairs will be done without any additional cost to the taxpayer, as funds were from our district surplus and increased state aid. We also were able to reduce our original tax school tax bill by $200,000.

One immediate challenge we must face is that the construction of modular classrooms is currently slightly behind schedule forcing us to delay the start of the new school year for students by two days until Monday, September 10th. Teachers will report to school on Thursday, September 6th and, as always, will work diligently to prepare for the arrival of students.

I call on everyone to be positive as we navigate these challenges. You can model for our students how to adapt and make the best of our circumstances. After all, school is not simply a building, but an experience that opens our minds to a brighter tomorrow. Regardless of where the learning takes place, our professional educators and support personnel are committed to providing our students many learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Together, standing shoulder to shoulder, we will make 2018-19 a very positive and productive year.  We value the amazing home-school connection here at Little Ferry because you all play an integral role in each student’s success.  An unknown author once wrote, “The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book.”

The children of Little Ferry are fortunate to have the best teachers both at home and at school! I have never seen a community with more heart when it comes to working for a better tomorrow for our children. I’m looking forward to sharing another year of success!  Please check our website often for more updates at http://www.littleferry.k12.nj.us/.

Official Statement
Closing of Washington School
Frank R. Scarafile - Superintendent of Schools

March 27, 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian/Stakeholder,

Last night the Board of Education approved a plan brought forth by administration to formally apply to the state to close Washington School. Built in 1914, Washington School has housed our 1st & 2nd Graders for the past twenty-five years. Over time, the building structure has deteriorated to the point that it needs over 1.5 million dollars in new roofing, re-doing ceilings, and fixing air-conditioning and heating. That is without any other emergency items that crop up. The bottom line is that we are closing the building for ‘Health & Safety Reasons.”

At this juncture, the Board of Education has to get the permission from the New Jersey Department of Education to close the building and allow us to put up a brand new, temporary, modular structure in the rear of Memorial School. This building will service our Pre-K classes, as well as our 7th & 8th Graders.

We plan to have a community meeting in mid-May, to give everyone the information necessary to make this transition seamless. There is a plan for a referendum on building a new Elementary School. We look forward to your comments and input during this transition. Again, I thank you for your trust in my judgement and leadership to make our school district the best it can be!
